If you're in "Captain & Commander Mode" a described by David Allen, you probably wouldn't be reading this, but here are a couple of key questions to ask yourself to be sure:
- Do you feel overburdened, or anxiety, from all of the commitments in your life?
- Do you find it difficult to focus on a single task at a time?
- Do you weigh every action you take based on its importance instead of its urgency?
- When you delegate something, are you confident it will be done correctly the first time?
- Do you lose sleep thinking about what you need to do tomorrow?
If you answered yes to at least two of these questions, your more than likely spending less than 25% of your day in Captain & Commander mode and you are falling far short of your potential. Now think about those moments in life where you forget about everything else and lose all track of time- those moments when you are "in the zone". The zone IS Captain & Commander Mode and you should be in it 80% of the time or more whether you are contemplating a new corporate merger, or playing catch with your child. It's about being in the moment enough to enjoy it because you know everything else is in control.
The Self Management Matrix
In the follow-up book to GTD, "Making It All Work" (p. 62) Mr. Allen explains the self management matrix and the importance of how our perspectives impact the mode in which we operate as pictured below: (Buy the book on Amazon.com)

What Vincent Laganella has discovered personally in coaching GTD techniques within our own company, and with clients, is that managing your horizons is as important as the tactical moves you make within each one. The practical steps of implementing GTD free you to focus on the different horizons of purpose, desired outcomes, goals, and projects.
Individual Coaching Packages
Coaching is available in-person or online. Novice users of GTD must have a high-speed internet connection and web-camera for remote sessions. This may seem odd but part of moving work-life management from chaos, to mind-like-water, is getting your immediate environment under control and we have to be able to see it to know what we're dealing with. Laganella Consulting Group offers the following coaching packages.
- Two-day Deep Dive (most effective)
- One-day Quick Dip (immediate relief)
- Half-day toe dip (you'll be back for more)
- Two-hour GTD Tune Up (tweaking for maximum results)
